WORLD CLASS RACEWALKING
|
 Jefferson Perez of Ecuador |
The animated sequence of photographs shown above is of Jefferson Perez racewalking in a 10K race at Niagara Falls. The animation has been calibrated to approximate his 10K walking speed of just over 6 minutes per mile.
Perez is from Ecuador, won the 20K gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996, is a three-time world champion 20K racewalker, and formerly held the world record for the 20K racewalk with a time of 1:17:21 -- averaging 6:13.4 per mile for the 12.4-mile race (see note below). While top racewalkers display a wide variety of walking styles, Perez has a very smooth style that includes very little side-to-side hip motion. (Note: Russian Vladimir Kanaykin beat Perez's 20K world record by 5 seconds on 29 Sep 2007 but the new record had not yet been ratified by the IAAF as of mid October 2007.)
This animation was made by this Webmaster (with permission) based on photographs taken by Jeff Salvage and displayed at his Racewalk.com Web site. The photographs were edited to remove background distractions, reverse the direction of walking, and insure proper alignment. Jeff's photographs can be seen at www.racewalk.com/JPerez/Jperex.asp. |
